Glen Head’s Brianna Nerud Sets U.S. Record In Spain
Glen Head’s Brianna Nerud, 17, a recent graduate of North Shore High School, broke the high school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase twice this past week at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
Nerud, who just finished her senior year at North Shore HS in Glen Head, N.Y., ran the barrier event in 10 minutes, 00.72 seconds to finish in fifth place, the highest ever for any American.
Brianna had erased the high school record of 10:15.26, set by Madeline Meyers of The Northwest School (Seattle) exactly a year earlier on July 10, 2011.
Nerud’s time in the final was also an American Junior (under 20) record, eclipsing the 10:00.88 by Shelby Greany of Providence University at the 2010 NCAA Championships.
“I’m really happy about my race,” Nerud said. “I had a lot of fun and it was great racing such competitive international athletes and representing my country on Team USA.”
Nerud, a New York state champion, will attend Syracuse University on a full athletic scholarship.
In her senior year for North Shore HS, Nerud helped lead North Shore to its third straight Class A title, and won state and Federation titles.
With three more years in the under-20 division and the promise of a successful track career at Syracuse, Nerud has her eye on an Olympic berth.
